Snake River Landing: Christmas on the River

Sorry last week there was no post because I was in Oregon and my husband stayed here in Idaho Falls to work.

Thought I would put the word out for our date this week in case any of you wanted to go too.

Welcome in the Holiday Season Downtown on Friday the 3rd. From 3-5:30 at the Plaza downtown there will be free trolley rides, a treasure hunt through the shops, and the kick off for a 5k or 1 mile fun run.

At 5:15 they will be having the lighting ceremony for the Christmas tree.

From 5:30- 8 at Snake River Landing there will be more trolley rides, treats and craft fair, Christmas caroling and Santa will be there to visit.

Museum of Idaho: Decoding da Vinci

Last night we went to the Museum of Idaho in downtown Idaho Falls. This Museum hosts traveling exhibits that usually stay for a few months. Previously, I have seen the Titanic exhibit, and at the beginning of next year they will have a body exhibit. Over Christmas they have free Christmas theme displays. The current exhibit was one on Leonardo da Vinci, and it was really fun to see. There were a lot of displays that showed models of his work; many of them were hands on and you could experience them yourself.





The museum also houses a fun children's area and exhibits highlighting Idaho's history.

The museum costs $7 for adults, it's cheaper if you are students somewhere. If you want to take your kids Monday evenings they are open until 8pm and have a family price of $15. The museum of Idaho also does a special Christmas event.

BYU-Idaho concerts, activities, and events

This past week my brother was in town to check out BYU-Idaho so Friday night we went to a concert on campus. We saw Accoustic Cafe which had acoustic performances from students.

There are a lot of options for on campus activities that are open to the community, there are Center Stage events that are performers that come to BYU-Idaho. Some examples are David Archuleta, and ABBA tribute group, and Ryan Shuppe.

There is also student talent activities which show case the talent of people there. They have different kinds of music shows as well as dance performances and plays.

My tip would be to get there early- when it says be there 10 or 15 minutes before the performance, do. They do release the seats and you will have a hard time finding seating.

Events at BYU-Idaho are pretty cheap, most student talent performances tickets can be gotten for around $6 and then Center Stage are usually $12.

Cheap Movies and Rexburg Treats

Today I want to tell you about something wonderful they don't have where I am from... cheap movie theaters.

The premise is that they play movies after they go to the regular theater and before they go to DVD. So if you aren't totally itching to see a movie but want the big screen experience without the high cost this is the way to go.

There are a few different options. In Rexburg there is the Paramount 5 theater. We went there tonight to see Inception. Anyway, the Paramount is located on Center Street which is just off main. Adults are $3 and Children, Seniors, Matinee, and Tuesdays are $2. The owners of this theater also run the Teton View Drive In, which is only open in the summer.

In Idaho Falls there are two theater choices both owned by Royal Theaters. The Paramount Triplex is located behind the mall, just off of 17th Street. Adults are $3.50 and Children, Seniors, Matinee, and Tuesdays are $2.50.

The other Idaho Falls theater is the Centre Twin which is downtown Idaho Falls on Park Ave. This theater costs a little bit more than Paramount but it gets the movies earlier. Here the movies are $5 for adults and $3 for Children, Seniors, Matinee, and Tuesdays.

If you happen to choose to go to Rexburg there are a lot of yummy ice cream places around for a treat after. BRC is across the street which offers frozen custard that you can mix things in. Twizl Berry has frozen yogurt that you pay for by the ounce (similar to Kiwi Loco in Idaho Falls), Sammys is a new place for milkshakes and tonight when we went by it looked completely full, and Mill Hollow has wonderful soft serve in a variety of flavors.

Halloween Ideas, Safe Trick-or-Treating

This coming weekend is Halloween weekend and I thought I would post some things that you could do this weekend.

1. Boo at The Zoo: Oct 28, 29, 30th from 5- 8:30 PM Admission is $4. They have trick or treating around the zoo as well as crafts and costume contests.

2. Trick or Treat Street: Oct 29th 3-6 PM (Go early, it gets crazy) is at Snake River Landing. Kids trick or treat to businesses and RVS.

3. Trick or Treat on the Greenbelt: Oct 30 6-7 PM games and candy is given out along the green belt by the LDS young single adults.

4. Ririe Spooktackular: Oct 30 4:30- 6 PM this is an event that you can go and enjoy the whole time. A fundraiser dinner starts at 4:30 along with hayrides, there is a pumpkin carving contest, a trunk or treat along main street, and a haunted fire house. It's in downtown Ririe.

I know there are more but those are just the ones I know the most about, have a fun Halloween everybody. Below are the pictures of the pumpkins my husband and I carved for our date this week. We got them at the pumpkin patch a few weeks ago.

West Yellowstone, MT - Pizza, Playmill

This was a last minute trip that we made with my sister to meet up with my grandma and her husband before the weather got bad. We didn't go into Yellowstone because it's costs about $25 a car.

The drive was beautiful, about 1 1/2 hours north of Rexburg, just follow highway 20. The town of West Yellowstone is full of cute little touristy shops. There is a Bear and Wolf discovery center and an Imax theater. In the off season (i.e.- not summer) there are quite a few places that are closed, but during the summer it does get pretty busy, so be warned of that.

We ate lunch at Wild West Pizzeria and it was SO SO good. By recommendation we tried a local favorite that had bbq sauce, baked beans, red onions, and beef on it. It was way better than I expected, it was great. We also had the "Sitting Bull" which was basically meat lovers but also so good. It's also right across from the Playmill theater, which was closed for winter, but we'll be going to a show next summer for sure.

We also had ice cream at a place where they mix whatever flavors you want and there was a super cute little candy store with all sorts of old and new candies.

Anyway, it was a fun little trip, I love exploring new places.

Pumpkin Patches and the Rexburg Straw Maze

We had some company this last weekend and their request was to do something "fall-y" there are quite a few Straw or Corn Mazes around here so we choose the Rexburg Straw Maze, which is close to Big Juds where we ate lunch. We made it through the maze pretty fast, but we know it took longer for most people. We also thought it was fun enough to go in again. We did it three times. We opted to go during the day because they haunt it on weekend nights, and I definitely see how it could be scary. I know the weather looks yucky, but it doesn't matter, it stays warm in the maze.

You can buy pumpkins at the maze, but I am a firm believer in going to a real pumpkin patch. Last year we used this website to find a pumpkin patch. We choose Ashland Produce in Jefferson county. It's a cute little farm between Rigby and Ririe where you can either pick pre-picked pumpkins or pick them from the field. From the field they are $.20 a pound and they are beautiful pumpkins.
